학습 자료 둘러보기 →The primary threat in Reye's syndrome is cerebral edema leading to increased intracranial pressure (ICP). A change in level of consciousness signals that the brain is no longer compensating, putting the child at immediate risk for uncal herniation.
Apply the ABC priority framework. Altered consciousness directly threatens the airway due to loss of protective reflexes. This finding takes precedence over hepatic symptoms like elevated liver enzymes or early signs like vomiting and lethargy.
Do not mistake progressive lethargy for simple fatigue. It represents a worsening neurological stage. Immediate intervention includes notifying the provider, preparing for airway management, and initiating measures to reduce ICP, such as elevating the head of the bed to 30 degrees and maintaining head alignment.
