Assess respiratory function first, as tachypnea and hypoxemia are often the earliest signs. Neurologic changes like confusion or agitation signal systemic embolization. A petechial rash, especially on the anterior chest and axilla, is a characteristic but late finding.
Do not wait for all three triad signs to appear. Unexplained hypoxemia or a drop in SpO2 in a patient with a long bone fracture should trigger immediate escalation and oxygen support.
