Instruct on cast care: keep the cast clean and dry. Check for skin breakdown by smelling for foul odors and inspecting the cast edges. Never insert objects under the cast.
A painful, crying infant with a cast requires immediate evaluation for compartment syndrome or skin ulceration. Do not dismiss it as normal fussiness.
