학습 자료 둘러보기 →The immediate priority for an infant with a paroxysmal cough is to position for airway clearance. Elevate the head of the bed or hold the infant in a prone, head-down position to use gravity to drain thick secretions.
Be prepared with a bulb syringe or suction catheter at the bedside. Suction the mouth and nares gently before and after coughing spells, not during, to avoid triggering a gag reflex and worsening paroxysms.
Never leave the infant alone during a coughing episode. Continuous monitoring for apnea, bradycardia, and oxygen desaturation is critical. The "whoop" is a sign of severe airway narrowing and imminent respiratory failure.
