학습 자료 둘러보기 →For a stable child with suspected intussusception (classic triad: severe colicky pain, vomiting, currant jelly stools), the immediate priority is to maintain NPO status and prepare for a non-surgical pneumatic or hydrostatic reduction. This is a radiologic urgency, not an immediate surgical one, unless perforation is suspected.
The success of reduction is time-sensitive; delays of 6 to 12 hours can significantly decrease the success rate and increase the risk of bowel ischemia and necrosis. The nurse's role is to ensure the GI tract is empty for the procedure and potential sedation.
Never encourage oral fluid intake. Do not administer analgesics until a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan are established, as masking pain can obscure signs of deterioration. Surgical intervention is a secondary step if reduction fails or signs of peritonitis or perforation develop.
