학습 자료 둘러보기 →The catheter insertion site is a direct portal of entry for pathogens. Maintaining intact skin around the site is a critical defense. Assess the site every shift for signs of infection: redness, swelling, warmth, pain, or purulent drainage.
Use a sterile, transparent, semi-permeable dressing to cover the site, which allows for continuous visualization. Replace the dressing if it becomes damp, loosened, or soiled, using strict aseptic technique. Document the site's condition and any dressing changes meticulously.
Intact skin is a closed portal of entry. Any break in skin integrity from an invasive device provides a direct pathway for pathogens, significantly increasing the risk of a bloodstream infection. Never use topical antimicrobial ointments on the insertion site unless specifically ordered, as they can promote fungal growth and antimicrobial resistance.
