The classic triad of new urinary incontinence, dysuria, and cloudy urine is highly specific for a UTI. This finding takes precedence over chronic issues or stable abnormal vital signs in a confused patient.
Immediate intervention includes obtaining a urinalysis and culture before starting antibiotics. Delaying treatment can lead to urosepsis and worsen cognitive outcomes. Do not attribute confusion to dementia or aging without ruling out infection.
