Central hearing loss involves a breakdown in neural processing beyond the cochlea. The peripheral system detects sound normally, but the brain cannot interpret it, especially with competing background noise.
Do not mistake this for a peripheral hearing loss. Conductive and sensorineural losses will show abnormalities on pure-tone audiometry and tuning fork tests. A client with central loss may report being unable to hear in noise despite passing a standard hearing screening.
