In the Rinne test, compare air conduction (AC) at the ear canal to bone conduction (BC) on the mastoid process. Normally, AC is greater than BC (AC > BC). In conductive loss, the finding is reversed: bone conduction is greater than or equal to air conduction (BC >= AC).
A normal Rinne test (AC > BC) does not rule out sensorineural loss. If the Weber lateralizes to the better-hearing ear and Rinne is normal, suspect sensorineural hearing loss in the opposite ear.
