The most lethal consequence is its effect on cardiac conduction, leading to life-threatening arrhythmias like ventricular fibrillation. Applying the ABC framework, assessing Circulation by checking for signs of cardiotoxicity is the highest priority.
Assess the client for signs of hyperkalemia, including muscle weakness, palpitations, and ECG changes such as peaked T-waves and a widened QRS complex. A serum potassium level greater than 5.0 mEq/L confirms the diagnosis, but clinical signs warrant immediate intervention.
Do not delay cardiac assessment for other important tasks like fluid balance monitoring or dietary teaching. A potassium level above 6.5 mEq/L or the presence of ECG changes constitutes a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment to prevent cardiac arrest.
