This deterioration may signal serious complications such as antibiotic resistance, progression to sepsis, development of empyema, or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The provider must reassess the patient and the treatment plan, which may include ordering new cultures, broadening antibiotics, or escalating the level of care.
Do not simply administer the next scheduled antibiotic dose without questioning the order. The current regimen may be ineffective or harmful. Independent interventions like repositioning or increasing oxygen are supportive but do not replace the urgent need for medical re-evaluation of the underlying cause.
