Stabilization is achieved by using bulky dressings or tape to secure the object without applying pressure that could push it deeper. Manual stabilization must be maintained during patient transport and positioning.
Never remove an impaled chest object in the prehospital or emergency department setting. Removal is performed only in a controlled surgical environment with a team prepared for immediate thoracotomy and vascular repair. Premature removal can instantly convert a controlled injury into an exsanguinating hemorrhage or a tension pneumothorax.
