학습 자료 둘러보기 →The most critical distinction in hyperthermia is between heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Heatstroke represents a failure of the body's thermoregulation.
The hallmark of heatstroke is central nervous system dysfunction (altered mental status, delirium, seizures) combined with anhidrosis (hot, dry skin). This signals that the core temperature has risen uncontrollably, often exceeding 40.5°C.
In contrast, heat exhaustion typically presents with profuse sweating, fatigue, and headache. Thermoregulation is still partially intact, making it a less immediately life-threatening emergency than heatstroke.
Do not wait for anhidrosis to diagnose heatstroke in every case; exertional heatstroke may present with continued sweating. Altered mental status is the key defining feature requiring immediate, aggressive cooling.
