학습 자료 둘러보기 →Following a long bone fracture, the highest risk period for Fat Embolism Syndrome (FES) is 12 to 72 hours post-injury. Any sudden onset of confusion, respiratory distress, or petechial rash on the chest, axillae, or conjunctivae is a medical emergency.
Immediate nursing actions must focus on ensuring adequate oxygenation and cerebral perfusion. Administer high-flow oxygen, notify the provider and rapid response team immediately, and prepare for potential transfer to a higher level of care. Continuous monitoring of SpO2 and neurological status is essential.
Do not dismiss early signs like restlessness or mild confusion as simple anxiety or pain. The petechial rash is transient and may be absent in up to 50% of cases, so its absence does not rule out FES. Respiratory failure can be the first and only sign in fulminant cases.
