학습 자료 둘러보기 →For a patient with a suspected hip fracture and visible deformity, the highest priority is a neurovascular assessment. Check the 5 Ps: Pain, Pulse, Pallor, Paresthesia, and Paralysis. This establishes a baseline and detects limb-threatening injuries like compartment syndrome or vascular compromise before interventions that could mask symptoms.
Administer pain medication only after the neurovascular exam. Opioids can alter sensorium and hide early signs of compartment syndrome, such as pain disproportionate to the injury. Document the initial assessment clearly to track any deterioration.
Never encourage range-of-motion exercises on an acutely fractured, unstabilized limb. Movement can displace bone fragments and worsen neurovascular injury. Keep the patient still and support the affected leg in neutral alignment until definitive stabilization.
