학습 자료 둘러보기 →Actinic keratosis (AK) presents as rough, scaly patches on sun-exposed areas such as the face, scalp, ears, and dorsal hands. The texture is often described as sandpaper-like and is more easily felt than seen.
The underlying pathology is hyperkeratosis, a thickening of the stratum corneum caused by chronic UV radiation. AKs are precancerous and carry a risk of progression to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
Do not confuse AK with basal cell carcinoma, which appears as a pearly nodule with telangiectasias, or melanoma, which presents as an asymmetrical mole with irregular borders. Palpation is key for detecting the subtle scale of AK.
