The presence of a firm, immobile mass with irregular borders is a high-risk finding that warrants immediate diagnostic imaging (diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound) and core needle biopsy. Fixation to the chest wall or skin indicates tumor invasion beyond the breast parenchyma. The upper outer quadrant is the most common site for breast carcinoma.
Bilateral cyclical tenderness and small, mobile, round lumps that fluctuate with menses are typical of fibrocystic changes. A solitary, rubbery, highly mobile mass in a young woman is often a fibroadenoma. Mild asymmetry is a normal anatomical variant and does not require intervention unless it is a new or progressive change.
