Instruct patients to remain upright for at least 2-3 hours after eating. Gravity helps retain gastric contents below the diaphragm when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is compromised.
Avoid recommending large meals or high fluid intake with meals, as these directly contribute to stomach bloating. Also, counsel against spicy foods and citrus fruits, which can chemically irritate the esophageal mucosa and decrease LES pressure.
