When a client with alcohol use disorder enters withdrawal, the body undergoes a hyperexcitable state because chronic alcohol consumption has suppressed the central nervous system. Abrupt cessation removes that suppression, leading to a surge of excitatory neurotransmitters. This neurochemical rebound can rapidly escalate from mild symptoms to life-threatening complications such as severe autonomic instability, seizures, and alcohol withdrawal delirium (AWD), formerly known as delirium tremens.
The priority nursing intervention is
frequent monitoring of vital signs and neurological status. This directly addresses the
