Prioritizing the ABCs: Airway, Breathing, Circulation
In any emergency, the nursing process is guided by the ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation). For this client, the most immediate threat to life is profound
hypoxemia (oxygen saturation of
88%). The pathophysiological mechanism is a ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) mismatch. A large embolus obstructs pulmonary blood flow to a segment of the lung, creating "dead space" where ventilation occurs but no gas exchange can take place.
