Understanding the Priority: Airway Management in Pertussis
For a 3-month-old infant with suspected pertussis, the most critical nursing intervention is to
position the infant to support airway clearance during coughing episodes. This action directly addresses the primary, life-threatening complication of pertussis in young infants: airway obstruction and apnea during severe paroxysmal coughing fits.
