Keep children rear-facing until they reach the maximum height OR weight limit of their convertible car seat, which is often 40 pounds or more. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends this as the safest practice, with age 2 as an absolute minimum benchmark.
The primary benefit is spinal cord protection. In a frontal crash, a rear-facing seat cradles the head, neck, and torso, distributing force across the shell. This prevents the violent forward head thrust that can cause SCIWORA or internal decapitation in a forward-facing toddler whose cervical vertebrae are not yet fully ossified.
Never place a rear-facing car seat in the front passenger seat with an active airbag. All children under 13 should ride in the back seat. A booster seat is not appropriate for a 2-year-old; transition only after the forward-facing harness limits are exceeded.
