Understanding the Priority: Why Epinephrine Comes First

While all the listed options are components of comprehensive anaphylaxis management, the highest priority is to halt this cascade at its source.
Pharmacological Rationale for Epinephrine
Administering
epinephrine 0.3-0.5 mg intramuscularly (IM) into the anterolateral thigh is the first-line, life-saving intervention. The rationale is based on its unique, non-substitutable pharmacological properties that directly counteract the pathophysiological mechanisms of anaphylaxis:

Delaying its administration to perform other interventions, such as establishing IV access or applying oxygen, is a common and dangerous error that increases the risk of poor outcomes
[1]. Therefore, the nurse's highest priority action is to immediately halt the progression of the reaction by administering IM epinephrine.
