The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is highly infectious and remains viable on surfaces for at least 7 days. The primary risk to household members is direct contact with infected blood through items like razors and toothbrushes.
Instruct the client to keep personal hygiene items separate and out of reach. All household members and sexual partners should be tested and receive the HBV vaccine if not immune.
While alcohol avoidance aids liver recovery, it does not prevent transmission. Antiviral therapy is not always indicated for acute infection and does not immediately neutralize the virus on contaminated objects.
