학습 자료 둘러보기 →A copper-colored, maculopapular rash on the palms and soles is the most specific and indicative sign of early congenital syphilis.
This rash results from the inflammatory response to disseminated Treponema pallidum spirochetes in the skin. The lesions are highly infectious.
Always correlate with maternal history. Untreated or inadequately treated maternal syphilis during pregnancy is the primary risk factor, with transmission possible at any stage.
Nonspecific signs like jaundice, low birth weight, or respiratory distress do not rule out syphilis but lack the diagnostic specificity of the palmoplantar rash. A full evaluation including serology and long-bone radiographs is required.
