학습 자료 둘러보기 →In a septic neonate, temperature instability, particularly hypothermia (96.2°F / 35.7°C), is the most critical finding. It reflects vasomotor collapse and metabolic failure.
Unlike adults, neonates often cannot mount a fever. Their brown fat stores for non-shivering thermogenesis are rapidly depleted, and their large body surface area accelerates heat loss. This indicates the body is no longer compensating but decompensating into shock.
Hypothermia is a pre-terminal marker in neonatal sepsis. Immediate interventions include placing the infant under a radiant warmer, monitoring blood glucose, and preparing for IV antibiotics and fluid resuscitation as ordered.
