학습 자료 둘러보기 →A myelomeningocele is a neural tube defect where the meninges and spinal cord are exposed. The most critical assessment finding is leakage of clear fluid from the defect, which is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
A CSF leak creates a direct portal of entry for bacteria, placing the neonate at imminent risk for meningitis and ventriculitis. This is a time-sensitive emergency that must be addressed before other chronic complications like paralysis or hydrocephalus.
Immediately notify the provider and apply a sterile, moist, non-adherent dressing over the defect to protect it from contamination. Place the newborn in a prone position with hips slightly flexed to minimize pressure and tension on the sac. Monitor for signs of infection including temperature instability, irritability, and lethargy.
