Viable nits are small, oval, and firmly cemented to the hair shaft. Their location is critical: they are typically deposited within 0.6 cm (1/4 inch) of the scalp to benefit from the warmth needed for incubation. Nits found further away are likely non-viable or already hatched.
Do not mistake easily removed white specks for nits. Hair casts or dandruff slide off easily with gentle finger pressure, whereas a viable nit is glued to the shaft and requires significant force to dislodge. A diagnosis of active infestation should not be made based solely on itching or scratch marks.
