For local swelling and pain, apply a cool compress to the site. The cooling effect causes vasoconstriction, which reduces the spread of inflammatory fluid and provides a numbing sensation. Do not rub or massage the injection site.
For systemic symptoms like fever and irritability, administer acetaminophen as ordered, based on the infant's weight. This safely reduces fever and discomfort without interfering with the immune response when used for symptom relief.
Never administer aspirin to a child with a fever, as it is associated with Reye's syndrome. A mild reaction is not a contraindication; withholding future vaccines puts the child at risk for preventable diseases.
