학습 자료 둘러보기 →A client over age 40 reporting difficulty with near vision and the need to hold objects farther away is the classic presentation of presbyopia. This is not a refractive error but a physiological loss of lens elasticity.
During assessment, document the client's specific complaint, such as "holds books at arm's length to read." Test near visual acuity using a Jaeger card at a standard distance of 14 inches. The near point of accommodation recedes with age, making this the key finding.
Do not confuse presbyopia with hyperopia (farsightedness). Hyperopia is a lifelong refractive error due to eyeball shape, while presbyopia is an age-related onset, typically beginning in the fourth decade of life. Sudden vision changes require urgent referral to rule out pathology.
