학습 자료 둘러보기 →Instruct the patient to discontinue calcium supplements at least 24 hours before the scan. Undissolved tablets in the GI tract can appear as dense, radio-opaque areas over the spine or hip, creating an artifact that causes a falsely elevated bone mineral density (BMD) reading.
The scan uses two low-dose X-ray beams to measure bone mineral content. The result is a T-score, where a value of -2.5 or lower defines osteoporosis. An accurate, artifact-free image is essential for correct diagnosis and treatment decisions.
Do not confuse this with instructions for other imaging studies. Fasting is not required, and patients do not routinely need to remove all metal objects unless they contain zippers or snaps directly over the scan area. The primary goal is to avoid any concentrated calcium residue that could mask true bone loss.
