Assess for a companion finding, Grey Turner's sign (flank ecchymosis). Both indicate tracking of hemorrhagic fluid from the retroperitoneal space to subcutaneous tissue.
Cullen's sign is a late finding. Immediately assess for hypovolemic shock (hypotension, tachycardia) and notify the provider. Do not delay intervention to manage expected symptoms like pain or fever.
