서류를 통과한 ○○ 씨에게 영어로 면접 일정 메일이 옵니다. 한국 면접처럼 "1분 자기소개"를 외워 가면 될지, 영어로 임상 사례를 설명하라고 하면 어떻게 할지 걱정이 됩니다. 이 장은 미국 임상영양사 면접에서 자주 나온다고 알려진 내용을 질문 유형 → 답변 구조 → 예시 답안 → 꼬리질문 순서로 정리합니다. 특정 문장을 그대로 옮기지 않고 유형으로 재구성했으며, 실제 형식은 기관마다 다르니 면접 안내 메일의 설명을 기준으로 삼으세요.

행동 질문("Tell me about a time…")에는 STAR 구조가 널리 권장됩니다. Situation(상황), Task(내 역할), Action(내가 한 행동), Result(결과)의 머리글자입니다. 임상 지식 질문에는 3장의 ADIME 순서로 말하면 생각의 흐름이 정리되어 들립니다.
한두 문장. 언제, 어디서, 어떤 환자·팀이었는지.
한 문장. 그 상황에서 내가 맡은 책임.
가장 길게. 내가 한 일을 순서대로, "we"가 아니라 "I"로.
결과와 배운 점. 확인 가능한 변화(섭취량, 체중, 팀의 결정)와 다음에 달리 할 점.

"I'm a dietitian trained in both Korea and the U.S. I completed my dietetic internship at ○○, where my clinical rotation focused on medical-surgical and renal patients. Before that, I worked as a licensed dietitian in Korea, which taught me to manage high patient volumes and to explain diet changes simply. I'm applying to this role because I want to grow in inpatient clinical nutrition, and I can also counsel Korean-speaking patients in their own language."
(현재 → 과거 경험 → 이 자리를 원하는 이유 순서, 60초 안팎)
"(S) During my clinical rotation, an older patient with poor intake refused the oral nutrition supplement we recommended. (T) My task was to find a way to improve his intake. (A) I asked him why he refused and learned he disliked the sweet taste. I checked his chart and preferences, offered two unflavored options, and discussed the plan with my preceptor and the nurse so that the supplement was offered between meals. (R) Over the next few days his documented intake improved, and I learned that asking 'why' before repeating a recommendation saves time for everyone."
(거부 → 이유 질문 → 대안 제시 → 팀 공유 → 결과·배운 점. 실제 본인 경험으로 바꿔 쓰세요)
"I would just follow the doctor's order." 또는 "I would insist because I'm the nutrition expert."
"First, I would make sure I understand the physician's concern. Then I would share the specific data behind my recommendation, such as weight change and intake records, and refer to our hospital's protocol or guidelines. If we still disagree, I would document both the recommendation and the discussion, follow the final medical decision, and continue monitoring so that we can revisit the plan with new data."
(상대 이해 → 근거 제시 → 기록 → 최종 결정 존중 → 모니터링)
임상 질문은 정답 하나를 외우기보다 순서를 보여 주는 것이 중요합니다. ADIME 순서로 "판정(체중, 검사, 위장관 기능 확인) → 요구량 계산 → 제품과 투여 방식·속도 권고 → 내성과 수치 모니터링 → 기록" 흐름을 말하고, 구체적 수치는 그 병원의 프로토콜을 따른다고 덧붙이면 안전합니다. 확신 없는 수치를 지어내기보다 "I would follow the hospital's protocol and confirm with the team"이라고 말하는 편이 낫습니다.
면접 끝의 "Do you have any questions for us?"는 17장의 좋은 자리 기준을 확인할 기회입니다.
💡 팁 STAR 사례를 5개 정도 미리 영어로 써 두면 질문이 달라도 골라 쓸 수 있어요. 어려운 환자, 팀 갈등, 실수, 우선순위, 교육 성공 사례 다섯 가지면 대부분의 행동 질문을 막을 수 있어요.
